One CME Has Arrived, Another is Coming

The CME launched from Monday's M5.7 flare arrived at Earth on July 20th at 1651 UTC. As forecasted, it was only a glancing blow; however, it proved to be even weaker then expected. This chart from DSCOVR of the Bt shows the impact:

As it was weaker than expected, the impact only sparked active Kp 4 conditions. Only high latitude sky watchers would have seen a show (although the sky is never dark at high latitudes in the summer).

There is a second CME coming from an eruption that took place around AR 3376 on July 18th. It is forecasted to arrive on July 21st. While this impact may not be very potent either, the combined effect of the two CMEs could spark geomagnetic storms. G1 (Kp 5) should be likely, with a slight chance for escalation to G2 (Kp 6).
